Applied research area

Energy Transition

Conversion, control, operation and efficient management of power and energy systems.

Main objective

This area researches and develops the technologies that enable a more sustainable future: large-scale, efficient and reliable integration of renewable energy into the grid, electromobility for public and private transport, resilient microgrids, small-scale energy harvesting, efficient lighting systems, cost-effective energy storage, and the intelligent operation and planning of power systems alongside the regulation of the electricity market.

The team holds interdisciplinary capabilities that run from the development of power hardware and microprocessors, and control and monitoring software, through to the analysis, planning and operation of power systems, which lets it deliver end-to-end solutions for the energy industry.

It has a distinguished record and international recognition, with numerous publications, collaborations with international networks, students from abroad and contracts with companies, some of them international such as TMEIC of Japan.
